At odds with the recording of Matt Pond PA's follow-up to Measure, Matt Pond, the central conspirator of the Pennsylvania music collective, found the light. The somber and subdued compositions that had beautifully blanketed Measure were lifted and POND quickly found himself rerouting the three months of studio work. I Thought You Were Sleeping is Matt Pond PA's segway between the malaise that was and solace that is to come. After leaving the life of "rock" to pursue an aching, orchestral pop vision, Pond assembled the first incarnation of MPPA to record Deer Apartments mid '97. The trio laced their debut full-length with minimal string and horn arrangements, a prodding rhythm section, and Pond's poignant vocals and guitar work. Over the next year, Pond expanded the line up and begin work on Measure. Devoid of the electric guitar and traditional tuning of Deer Apartments, the collective's second album relied on dramatic string arrangements and minor-key melodies to communicate Pond's dark reveries. Warmly received by fans and critics alike, Pond immediately began work on a melancholy addendum to Measure but soon came to the sad revelation. "Other Countries", the EP's opening track, reflects Matt's initial studio work. Strings and French horn solemnly waltz around arpeggio guitars and a familiar melody. Similarities with Measure stop with the second and third tracks. "Put Your Hair Down" floats with delicate vibes and an appropriately awkward guitar riff while "St. Andrews" jars along with distorted guitars, bass, and lulling horn blasts. The title track, "I Thought You Were Sleeping", further elucidates the theme of discourse that rings throughout the EP.
