Twee Kitten review of The Heartfelt
by Keith Mclachlan

The new New Order record is an abomination! And yet this has not stopped it from receiving hearty cheers from the British music press who once upon a time talked up the atrocity that was 'Republic' in the same manner. Even the voice, which once effortlessly melted hearts with its non-plussed delivery is somehow now old and resignedly tired. Sheesh. But that old voice, it's glorious past has obviously been blueprint for both the Figurine boys. It isn't so much singing as a sing-song pleasant almost-whispering of heartfelt sentiments. Ah then we now come to 'The Heartfelt' my what a lovely and apt title to express the warmth and glow inside. The first Figurine record was all about interfacing with machines, making a new more encouraging robotic future and this one seems to be more about the connections those machines facilitate between carbon based organisms which is especially poignant in Figurine's case since they three all live in separate cities and record their music by swapping files over the internet. It's a digital love story, so heartfelt. March records claims it is not romantic pop, perhaps they are simply tryng to remove any possible comparisons to ABC?!? Which is quite ridiculous because this record is incredibly romantic, just as all of the best synth-pop is (OMD, Erasure) with its transfusion of human emotion into the cold soldered ends of bits and bytes. Even the instrumentals spark a nostalgic reminiscence to youth and causes flashbacks of Molly Ringwald and frilly foot socks to drift in and out of your mind's eye. The title track is the most futuristic thing on here with a skittering almost jungle beat (remember when jungle was the future?) and desperate and longing lyrics of love just like all of the other songs. Maybe it's the sign of the future, love bloomng all over Instant Messenger and only the spectre of distance keeps them apart, who knows perhaps it will one day be a lovelorn IM buddy who invents teleportation so that he and his love (screenname:tottlfrk) can share the same patch of planet.
