Siesta description:
Ramn Leal is a life peer as king of bossa nova and his active patience is some kind of philosophy. There are many enviable credentials a musician might have and Ramn Leal has some stunning ones: a solid cult following, the significant relationship bloomed with Siesta, his multi-instrumentalist skills, his past performance with Astrud Gilberto, his cooperation with an intriguing array of musicians, wayward genius as producer, guitar prodigy.... After the superlative "Bossanova 1999" and "Clube da chave" here comes "Cordas e metais" a cohesive work with orchestrated songs, his superb voice and the contribution of diva Ana Laan (Rita Calypso). Not surprisingly, this record is released in Japan by the powerful Sony Columbia empire. Our maestro, our George Martin enters his golden period with a blend of melancholic sounds written by all-time greats such as Barroso, Jobim, Lobo, Buarque, Rosa, Lyra, Noronha... still intense but calmer, wiser and kinder sounds if possible. This is a exotic and burgeoning record to be listened with some saudade and a fan. The legendary carioca designer (from the golden era of cover art in bossa nova) Cesar Villela -who produced superb jacket designs for the Elenco and Odeon records- contributes to the eye-catching artwork. What else is necessary?
A perfectionist, Ramn is constantly pushing himself and his musicians to do better. Leal's voice is a marvel, a clear and thoroughly natural instrument. His acoustic music has a delicate and sophisticated hue. His records target faithful audiences to a genre and to craftmanship. Ramn has an outstanding reputation in countries like Japan or the Philippines.
Musically, there is a lot to love about the new songs featured in Cordas e metais. All of them are immediately satisfying and may be characterised by clever and elegant arrangements (string and brass), with layers of intertwining melody building to good effect. Instruments uncommon to the more classic bossa nova appear including trombone, flugelhorn, cello are particularly effective. Some songs have a Tropicalia touch, others are like flying bossa nova waltzes with demanding orchestrations.
Having said that however, there is a heavy reliance on guitar, bass and drums at the core of the songs, around which arrangements are spaciously displayed. The appeal of Mr. Leal is timeless and dual; he displays equal parts of quintessential bossa nova simplicity and emphasis in rhythm (samba). Delicious and intense.
The songs are pure and straight from the heart and more importantly... Mr. Leal does not look nor act the part of a pop star. Instead, he comes across as someone you might walk past on the street or who might live next door. But that is exactly his appeal. The man's lack of pretentiousness and his ability to concentrate solely on his art is amazing.... If this man never becomes a huge celebrity it will be because he is not opting to play the game. If you are just now discovering him, this is a fine introduction to his singing gifts and versatile approach to music, an experience you will long remember. If this music doesn't lift your spirits, check your pulse!
