Siesta description:
The music of Scarlet's Well is a little circle of light amidst the surrounding darkness of today's music. No one doubts that Bid (glittering hero of The Monochrome Set) is of exceptional nature and arguably one of the most enigmatic and gifted musicians. Scarlet's Well is his fantastic invention, a project with his songs and vocals and the addition of female vocalists and the mastery of Toby Robinson and other world-class musicians to generate tales, sketches and portrayals that fuel our fantasy. The fourth record fuses spirit and intellect into poetry. And all of it springs from a single seed, Mousseron, where a bunch of characters return to sing tales and everyday stories in a very strange inn after some supernatural adventures in the underground ("Alice in the underworld"). This record is a balm to the souls of those who believe that "imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he isn't; and a sense of humour to console him for what he is".
"The Dream Spider Of The Laughing Horse" has a vast edifice of colossal crystal and multifold songs, light psychedelia, dimensional ballads and fervent pop. You get the impression of being in the countryside enjoying the sight of a herd of white horses galloping through a field of wild hyacinths and a nearby frog eating candyfloss tells you the recent whereabouts and incursions of the villains.
Well, all of the Scarlet's Well albums take place in the serene and fairylike atmosphere of Mousseron, a mysterious place in a secret map where there is picaresque and inexplicable occurrences. Elements from the preceding albums "Strange Letters", "The Isle Of The Blue Flowers" and "Alice in the underworld" can be found here, not only in instruments and string arrangements, but in the sense of imaginative unity and depths of space and time of the plot. There are also some Mono Set, hints and Morricone's, XTC's, Kurt Weil's, Velvet Underground's and Santana's strokes in this album. The record is an extraordinary exercise that proves that Bid is not only. blessed with a deep human insight and a great intelligence but with a pure and fully fledged sense of amusing himself with music. The sleepy British scene should emulate the wit and attitude of this brigade of musicians. Let's challenge the oppressive regime!
I don't know if Bid will turn in the future to the Iliad, Odyssey and Aeneid, to Lovecraft, Poe, Swift or Kipling or to the Babylonian epics or the Arabian nights to acquire plots for his songs but what can be clearly said is that his music is dream-like, authentic, sumptuous and catchy. Everything is sweetly performed by his fellow voyagers (with utmost care) and even the sublime and dramatic appearances of female vocalists (not to mention the seductive voice of Bid) show a very special diction.
The well-crafted tunes of "The Dream Spider Of The Laughing Horse" could literally bewitch and dazzle listeners, carrying them away to fantastic realms and energizing both their spirit and their imagination. Let's call them the angelic sounds of enchantement.
The creative faculty in Scarlet’s Well is like the microscope or the telescope -- it does not invent but rather discovers; that others do not see is simply the fault of their defective vision or imagination.
